Leo the Lion - Mascot of the Metro Goldwyn Mayer

Leo the Lion is the trademark lion mascot for the Hollywood film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (a.k.a. MGM). Leo first roared was in July 31, 1928 for the movie "White Shadows of the South Seas" an adventure romance film produced by Cosmopolitan Productions in association with MGM and distributed by MGM.

The MGM lion logo was created in 1916 by the Paramount Studios art director Lionel S. Reiss for the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation by advertising executive Howard Dietz. Around the circle that framed Leo the Lion is displayed the MGM motto "Ars Gratia Artis" (English: Art for Art's Sake) in the beginning of each film.
